Portable Observation Frames
Continuing with my practice-led exploration and building on this notion of framing and highlighting aspects of place, I aimed to create cartographic artworks that invite viewers to engage with the environment in new ways, drawing attention to how specific framings and points of focus can shift perception and reveal alternative ways of seeing familiar spaces. This inspired the final cartographic artwork, Portable Observation Frames, where framing became the key concept. The goal was to create a cartographic artwork that would not only serve as a tool for intentional viewing, but also amplify the sounds of the natural environment, enabling the viewer to see and hear with purpose, and experience the neighbourhood from a fresh perspective. I felt it important to add a sound element to the cartographic artwork, as one’s experience of place is multisensory, and the more senses I could integrate into the cartographic artwork, the more it would add to one’s experience of place.
